Gay Marriage: One of Many Reasons NOT to Support Mitt Romney

The modern times sicken me.

I cannot believe this country is still in an era where we as a people would presume to withhold any civil liberties from any minority.  Murders, rapists, and molesters are allowed to marry.  People are allowed to marry, divorce, adulterate, fornicate, and party down like there's no tomorrow, and do it again and again!  However, in much of the country, and if Mitt Romney would somehow accomplish his goal, everywhere in this country, it would be illegal for gay people to wed.  It blows my mind EVERY TIME that I think about it.  When I think how I would feel if I were not allowed to marry my husband, my soul mate, the love of my life, it is torturous.  And for what reason?  Why don't we say people with red hair can't get married?  Why don't we say people who are unemployed can't get married?  It makes about as much sense.

First, lets delve into what the Bible says about homosexuality, and about gay marriage, since that seems to be the typical cop out that people use to mask their own homophobia...

Lev. 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."

Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them"

These are two of the big guys.  These are two of the ones that people feel entitle them to condemn gay people to hell.  However, most people with biblical knowledge also know that the holiness codes of Leviticus being discussed in these scripture are directly referring to the depraved neighbors.  "The codes make the Israelites unique from their neighbors, and they reflect a particular time and place in Israelite history. Any contemporary critique must note this reality before invoking the codes as ammunition against same-sex practice"  (citation)  Sadly, it is common practice to take biblical scripture totally out of context to hurt people who are different...

1 Cor. 6:9-10, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."

Here is another biblical reference commonly used to condemn gays.  However, note the list of sins which prevent one from inheriting the kingdom of God...  Did you know that for biblical purposes, if you had sexual intercourse with more than one person, you are an adulterer?  We are commanded to keep ourselves pure for our one and only.  So if you have done the nasty before marriage, no kingdom of God for you!  If you have been married and divorced, and remarry, yep you're an adulterer!  Because you have not remained true to your original mate.  Plain and simple.  If you have ever wanted what someone else has, you are a coveter. Additionally, if you are unwilling to part with what you have, you are a coveter.  Ever had a buzz?  DRUNKARD!  Ever used swear words?  Reviler!  I have never ever met a single soul who can say they are not guilty of one of the sins on this list.  This list compares homosexuality to saying swear words.

So, do you think there's a possibility that people have taken God's word in this case a bit seriously in order to infuse it with their own hate?

A customer in a restaurant once said to me, "I have nothing against gays, I just think its against the Bible!"  I almost snort laughed.  She was smoking a cigarette at the time, cussing (in front of children), and has a child with a man she never married and is not in a relationship with him.  She does not wear skirts, and she sure does cut her hair...  The list goes on and on.  People ought to be very careful when the cite the Bible as their reason for being against homosexuality and gay marriage.  Dust off your own doorsteps.

The bottom line is that it is not the job of any Christian to condemn a gay.  If God has a problem with it, He'll deal with it.  The Bible is clear about how Christians are to KEEP THEIR LIPS ZIPPED.  When we take it upon ourselves to pass judgement, we are failing to recognize GOD as the one and only God, and guess what that makes us...

I have many gay loved ones.  When I hear any person say that they are against gay marriage, I believe they are saying that gays are substandard, or less than human.  Because, isn't that what we mean when we presume to withhold basic human liberties from ANY person for ANY reason?  That they don't DESERVE it?  Many people who support Mitt Romney skirt the issue of his stance on gay marriage and homosexuality because he would never be able to get the house to pass these laws anyway...  But that is not the point.  How can we support any person as a presidential candidate to rule our people who thinks that any minority is UNDESERVING of a basic civil liberty?  Whether these mandates ever come to pass or not won't change the hate in his heart.

Even if you oppose gay marriage and homosexuality yourself, consider this.  If he is willing to mandate marriage, and he's willing to mandate what a woman can do with her body, you would be well advised to take stock of the civil liberties that YOU enjoy that may be stripped away as well.

Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.  Mark 12:31

The Bible says it over and over again.  When will we ever learn?
